The Second Chance Choir offers a staged approach to choral singing.
Level 1 is designed for those who have little or no experience of singing or who are returning to it after a long gap. The environment is very supportive and intended to help a person rediscover their voice under the sympathetic and experienced teaching of the Musical Director. Everybody understands how nervous a new singer can feel as we have all been in the same position ourselves. There are simple vocal exercises to enable progression from speaking voice to singing voice and to find out what this can achieve with practice. The Level 1 group explore songs of different musical styles; enjoy rounds and make a gentle progression to music written for two voice parts.
Level 2 tackles more advanced pieces. It is for singers with some experience (gained, perhaps, in the Level 1 group) and with more confidence in their voices. Four part music is sung by sopranos, altos, tenors and basses. Even in Level 2, it is not critical that everybody is able to sight read: each piece of music is thoroughly taught in the weekly sessions of the choir.
For the larger choral works, practice CDs allow home rehearsal of each of the parts. Many in Level 2 have been enjoying singing together with the Second Chance Choir for a number of years.
